Celebrity Guest!

Steve Jackson

Steve Jackson graduated from Rice University in Houston. While there, he spent most of his time playing wargames and working on the student paper, the Thresher (he spent two years as editor). He became a writer and game publisher, proving that college can be very valuable as long as you don't let classes get in your way.

Steve's first professional design work was for Metagaming, which published his Ogre, its sequel G.E.V., Melee, Wizard, and several other games. In 1980, Steve bought the rights to Ogre and The Space Gamer magazine from Metagaming and started his own company. That company, Steve Jackson Games Incorporated, is now 30 years old and employs more than 20 people.

One of the first releases on the SJ Games label, Raid on Iran (1981), was a critical and sales success. The next year, SJ Games released its first big hit, Car Wars . . . followed shortly by Illuminati. He's still writing games; his past and current endeavors include GURPS, INWO, Munchkin, Zombie Dice and Cthulhu Dice.

Steve is a dedicated SF reader and fan, and enjoys attending both gaming and SF conventions. He writes filksongs (adequately) and sings (very badly). His other interests include gardening (especially water gardening), Lego, pirates, trains, beekeeping, dinosaurs and tropical fish. In his copious free time, he looks at webcomics, eats, and sleeps.

Adam Daigle

Adam Daigle is a freelancer living in Austin, Texas who has written and edited for a wide range of publishers in the RPG industry. An incomplete degree in English landed Adam a lucrative job in the restaurant industry, where he stayed up late at nights imagining strange creatures and even stranger stories. Highmoon Publishing gave Adam his first writing gig, and he has since gone on to write for 0one Games, Goodman Games, Paizo Publishing, Open Design, and Green Ronin.

Adam has done of his work for Pathfinder contributing material to Paizo’s product lines, specializing in monsters and world-building.

Adam, or Daigle as everyone calls him, is a member of the Werecabbages, a guild of award-winning writers, editors, and generally talented creatives.

Keith Baker

Keith Baker is a novelist and a game designer who enjoys finding out where the story goes. He created Eberron, winning the Wizards of the Coast Fantasy Setting Search in 2002. He has written for Atlas Games, Goodman Games, Paizo Publishing and Green Ronin Games, and has won two Origins Awards, for roleplaying and card games. He currently works for Zynga in Austin.

Matt Finch

Matt Finch is a roleplaying game author, publisher, and enthusiast. One of the leaders of the Old School Renaissance of D&D-style gaming, Matt was involved in Castles and Crusades and edited the Player's Handbook.   He was the initial author of OSRIC, but most recently he has founded Mythmere Games and is the creator of Swords & Wizardry, a retro-clone of the 1974 version of D&D.

Painting Competition!

Bring all of your best painted figures and units for display and recognition.

General Guidelines

  • All submissions must have been painted by the submitting contestant.
  • All submissions must include the name and age of the submitting contestant.
  • All submissions must include the manufacturer of the submitted figure(s).
  • All miniatures must be properly based, which means they have a base that has been finished, flocked, etc., as a minimum. You are NOT required to have a large elaborate base. Those contestants that mount their entries on more elaborate bases should take note of the limits on base sizes by category (below).

Head-to-Head Miniatures Painting Competition

There will be three separate categories for miniatures entries:

  • Fantasy
  • Historical
  • Modern/Sci-fi

For each category there will be three different classifications of miniature:

  • Best Single Miniature: up to 54 mm or 1/35 scale, maximum base size 5"x5".
  • Best Vehicle/Monster: up to 54 mm or 1/35 scale, maximum base size 8"x8".
  • Best Unit*: up to 54 mm or 1/35 scale, maximum base size 8"x8", minimum of five models.

* - a "unit" can include basically any small combat element that fights as one; this includes, but is not limited to, standard military units as well as nonstandard units, such as a Mordheim warband, or a mechanized infantry unit with men and a vehicle (of course, the vehicle would not be allowed to compete in the Vehicle category in that case). If you are unsure if your prospective entry would qualify, please contact us.

Please note that the "unit" competition is judged in part upon the unit character of the entry. Having minis that can simply be put together to make up a unit is not going to take home the prize on its own; it needs to look like a unit.

Each contestant may submit only one entry per category and genre. For example, a contestant may only submit a single entry for "Fantasy, Single Miniature". With three classifications and three categories, this means the most a contestant could submit is nine entries, one for each combination of category and classification.

Important Details

  • No entries may compete in two categories at once - A given miniature may only compete in one of the categories of the Head-to-Head Miniatures Painting Competition.
  • Storage: entries may be placed in a locked display case at Registration, on a first come first served basis; entries that cannot fit into the case will need to be brought to the Registration area for judging Saturday between 1900 and 2000.
  • Judging will occur Saturday between 1900 and 2000 (during the break between game slots) and winners will be announced in the Registration area at 1430 on Sunday (during the break between game slots). You do not have to be present during judging, but if your miniature is not secured in the display case, you may want to be present for security.  You should strive to be present when winners are announced, but contestants need not be present to win.
  • OwlCon cannot be held responsible for any damage done while handling or displaying your miniature(s).
  • Please be sure to stop by Registration and pick up your submitted miniatures after the judging is complete and prior to the convention’s closure on Sunday evening.
