Volunteers & Gamemasters

Conventions are a great place to meet like-minded folk and help strengthen the hobby. It is not without its rewards. For eight to twelve hours of work, you get free admission to the convention, a chance to help your hobby, and a cool commemorative T-shirt!  We need game masters, gophers, registration staff, security, and a lot more.  If you'd like to help out, please read on!

What We Need

  • Gamemaster (signup below) - As of 18JAN2002, we are no longer accepting Gaming Event Submissions, but we can still use a few more Volunteers. Conventions are a great place to meet like-minded folk and help strengthen the hobby. Run some games for us! It's a great experience and you might find some new players for your own campaigns. Generally, we want games that are established enough to attract players and still alive. Generally, we ask each GM to run two slots of a four hour game for six players, or 48 "player hours". So, a single event with a higher population and/or longer duration would also apply. We encourage demo-style gaming, but prefer if that was handled by dealers at/near their tables. GMs get free admission to the convention, a chance to help your hobby, and a cool commemorative OwlCon 2k2 T-shirt!
  • Volunteers (signup below)- Conventions are a great place to meet like-minded folk and help strengthen the hobby. It is not without its rewards. For eight to twelve hours of work, you get free admission to the convention, a chance to help your hobby, and a cool commemorative T-shirt!  We need gophers, registration staff, security, food slingers, and a lot more.  If you'd like to help out, please read on!
We generally ask volunteers to work about 8-10 hours for us. Some of the tasks are:
    • Registration - Sitting at the front desk, greeting people, handling money, giving out badges, answering questions, selling snacks and drinks, making runs for food and supplies. Affability, quick thinking, and the ability to smile are all great traits for this job.
Security - Hanging out in the Dealers' Room, watching over their booths, helping them out with random problems, making sure that open gaming does not spill over and compromise scheduled gaming, and helping with controlling random disasters and problems. Large physical size combined with an affable personality would be the ideal.
Criers - Just what it means. You will normally do Registration work, but when events are about to start, you will stroll through the Student Center and announce them. Obviously a voice with projection would be good.

Gaming Event Submission Form

As of 18JAN2002, we are no longer accepting Gaming Event Submissions, but we could still use a few more Volunteers.

The primary deadline for submitting gaming events was Friday, November 2, 2001. Events submitted prior to the deadline will simply have a priority for prize support and space. That deadline was enacted via our prize support sources, which required advanced notice of events to solicit prize support.

Conventions are a great place to meet new gamers and help strengthen the hobby.  We'll even give you a cool, free commemorative T-shirt! Gamemasters will be asked to run two sessions of gaming, the sessions can both be the same scenario or two different ones. If you run a third session, we'll think of something cool to give you, maybe some dealer dollars. If you'd like to run a game, please fill out the following form.

Note: You will be added to the OwlCon GM mailing list and OwlCon Announcements mailing lists to facilitate e-mail updates. The lists are not public and the list addresses and names are not reviewable by the public or the list members.

Playing Level of Intended Audience
Beginner: a complete novice can play the game.  Such a game will include the fine details that many more experienced players don't want to mess with.  For example, a fantasy game would include the ubiquitous tavern gathering and interacting with the bartender and such.  Such sessions are intended to recruit and educate would be players.  These sessions are great fun and do a great service for the hobby.  The Director of the con is very eager to have these.
Intermediate: If you just played in a Beginner session, you could probably handle it, but this adventure is more suited to people that understand the basics of the game fully and want to get right to the meat of the game.  This will probably be the majority of the games played.
Advanced: You have played the game a lot.  You know the nuances and have an opinion or house rule for a lot of the game mechanics.  You're jaded, you've seen it all, you're looking for something new and challenging.  We do not want a lot of these at OwlCon, but a few would be nice.

Privacy Requirements
Some games require a quiet room to allow a "mood" to be established, e.g. most horror games. What do you need?

Time Slot Preferences
Note: No Preference means that you will run any slot we choose (except All Nighters). We love entries like these, but you should be aware that we may not be able to consult with you to work out the best time, so if you choose this, please do so only if you really do not mind when your game is run. If you do mind, or you think you would like to do an All Nighter, then be sure to pick your specific choices. Feel free to use the Remarks column to elaborate on your choice(s).
